Say Goodbye to Flare-Ups: How Biologics Can Help You Take Control of Your Psoriasis

Updated: May 17, 2023

Psoriaguy here! Dealing with psoriasis can be a pain in the touchas (Yiddish for butt). The red, scaly patches on your skin be pretty painful, not to mention potential embarrassment.

One of the hardest parts of living with psoriasis is the emotional impact it can have. A lot of people with psoriasis feel self-conscious about their appearance (I know I was for a while, but that's a story for another time) and may even experience depression and social isolation as a result. The physical symptoms of psoriasis can also be really tough, with some people experiencing significant pain and discomfort.

Despite these challenges, there is hope yet for people living with psoriasis! Enter stage right: biologics. Biologics are injectable medications that work by targeting specific parts of the immune system. They've been shown to be really effective at reducing the symptoms of psoriasis, and they're often used in cases where other treatments haven't worked.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, biologics can lead to significant improvements in skin clearance, with some patients experiencing up to 75% improvement after just 12 weeks of treatment. Another study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that biologics were effective at reducing the severity of psoriasis in over 70% of patients.

While biologics can be a powerful tool in the treatment of psoriasis, it's important to keep in mind that they're not a cure. And even if a biologic may work at first, it may not work forever (I had to switch from Cosentyx to Tremfya last year). You will need to continue taking biologics long-term to keep your symptoms in check, but the benefits of biologics usually outweigh any potential downsides.

If you or someone you love is living with psoriasis, it's important to remember that you're not alone. There are a lot of resources available to help you manage your condition and live a full and fulfilling life. And with the help of treatments like biologics, it's possible to achieve significant symptom improvement and live a happier, healthier life.
