Psoriasis and Comorbidities: The Link Between Psoriasis and Other Health Conditions

Updated: May 17, 2023

Psoriaguy here! If you have psoriasis, you may have realized that it doesn't just affect your skin. In fact, this chronic skin condition has been linked to a bunch of other health issues, which are called comorbidities. Understanding these comorbidities can help you and your healthcare provider manage your overall health better.

What are comorbidities exactly? Comorbidities are the presence of two or more chronic health conditions in a single person. And if you have psoriasis, research has shown that you're more likely to develop certain comorbidities, like:

  • Cardiovascular disease: People with psoriasis have a higher risk of getting heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions. It's important to keep an eye on your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels if you have psoriasis.

  • Diabetes: People with psoriasis have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Eating well and exercising regularly can help.

  • Depression and anxiety: Living with a chronic skin condition can really mess with your mental health. If you're feeling down, hopeless, or anxious, it's important to get support.

  • Obesity: People with psoriasis are more likely to be obese, and obesity can make psoriasis symptoms worse. Losing weight through diet and exercise can help improve your skin (in addition to your overall health).

  • Arthritis: Some people with psoriasis get a form of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis, which causes inflammation, pain, and swelling in the joints. Getting an early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent joint damage.

It's worth noting that not everyone with psoriasis will develop comorbidities. However, being aware of your risk and taking steps to manage your overall health can go a long way in preventing or mitigating these conditions. If you're concerned about comorbidities, don't be afraid to bring it up with your healthcare provider. They can help you create a plan to manage your health and well-being.
